Fisheries sector

Tunisia occupies a central place in the Mediterranean. Its littoral exceeds 1300 km and it has 41 fishing ports, more than 360 industrial units of transformation and conditioning of the fishing products with a medical approval during 2020.

The fisheries sector annual production is about 140 thousand tons. It contributes to self-sufficiency and food safety by an annual average throughput of 15 kg/habitant.

Tunisian exports reached in 2020 23.5 thousand tons  for a value of 486 million dinars, witch placing this sector in the second place of agricultural produce exports, after the olive oil. European Union got the major part and the two principal products were the cephalopods (octopuses and cuttlefish) and the shellfish (shrimps).

Tunisia imported in 2020 58 thousand tons, for a value of 256 million dinars. They are primarily frozen tuna for the canning industry and of some species : the mule and the mullet for the local market.
